A lawyer’s clerk on Sunday allegedly assaulted a person on the premises of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court in Dhaka when the victim came to visit his detained uncle.

The incident of assault took place around 12:00 pm when victim Belal Hossain along with his family came to visit his uncle Monowar Ali on the court’s premises.

Nasima Begum, wife of Monowar Ali, also accompanied him during the visit.

Earlier on Saturday night, Police arrested Monowar Ali in a case filed with the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court from Rayerbag area in the capital’s Jatrabari.

Clerk Masud and his associates beat Belal Hossain and assaulted his wife Wahida Begum and aunty Nasima Begum in the presence of police.

Accused Masud identified himself as a member of executive committee of Dhaka Bar Association during the incident. At one stage, police rescued Belal and his family member.

Victim Belal Hossain told media that Masud allegedly snatched Tk 60,000 and his mobile phone.

“My wife was sexually harassed and inappropriately touched by Masud and his associates during the attack,” he alleged adding that: “They also took away a gold necklace of my wife.”

Belal Hossain also said, “I came to the court as my uncle’s bail hearing was scheduled to be held today. But they assaulted me and took away my money. I will file a case against Masud and his associates.”

Sub-inspector (SI) of Dhaka’s Kotwali Police Station Lal Mia, who was present during the attack, said, “We brought the situation under control during the incident. We will take legal action against the culprits.”

However, Masud claimed, “I am a member of executive committee of Dhaka Bar Association. We are the lawyers of complainant of the case. They (Belal and his family members) attacked us as their bail petition was denied by the court.”

General Secretary of Dhaka Bar Association Asaduzzaman Khan Rochi told media that, “How does a clerk become a member of the executive committee of the bar. Masud is not a lawyer. We will take punitive action against him.”
